Music to Nourish a Woman's Soul
"Beautiful, spiritual, and deeply moving"- these are some of the phrases used to describe Canfei Ruach. Canfei Ruach is a musical group dedicated to performing for women, drawing upon religious themes to nourish and strengthen women's spiritual life. Their sound is a weaving of the folk tradition with classical orchestration.
Tirtza Singer, the group's founder, is a singer, pianist, and
composer. "Tirtza's voice" says noted author Sarah
Shapiro, "is a cross between the voices of Judy Collins and
Julie Andrews." Tirtza's voice reflects the folk tradition
in which Tirtza has her roots and her years of operatic training.
It is both gentle and strong as she performs original music to
lyrics from the Siddur, Chumash, and Tehillim.
Flutist Rina Schaefer is an accomplished musician who has been a featured soloist with several symphony orchestras.
Canfei Ruach, which means literally, "Wings of the Spirit" was formed in 1990. The group's music reflects the overwhelming joy experienced by women as they seek to nourish their families spiritually and physically in Israel. It is Tirtza's hope to reach out to every individual woman through the universal language of music. Tirtza sees her music as binding together disparate groups in the unifying experience of joy, sorrow, and hope- felt daily by all women.
"Performing only in front of women's audiences," Tirtza Singer says, "is incredible for experiencing the common thread that binds us as women." After a concert, it is not uncommon for the audience to express their delight in feeling spiritually nourished. "When a woman tells me that my music really finds its way into her neshama, I feel such a deep source of happiness. At those moments I just sense this is why I am here. I'm doing what HaShem intended me to do in this life."
The one-and-a-half-hour length concert forum provided by Canfei Ruach is an excellent opportunity to fund-raise for your organzation. The music of Canfei Ruach connects to the deep space within us all that seeks sustenance and wholeness. The deep significance and meaning of the Jewish texts soar with the music. Canfei Ruach has performed in the United States at the Sudbrook Arts Center in Baltimore, at Jewish Community Centers in Teaneck, NJ and Stamford CT, at synagogues in Stamford, CT, Potomac MD, Westport, CT, at Kehillat Adat Jeshurun in Washington Heights in New York City, and the International Congress of Shluchim of Chabad in Crown Heights. In Israel the group has played at various venues in Jerusalem, Telz Stone, Bet Shemesh and Tzfat-including the well-known Tzfat Klezmer Music Festival. Tirtza's music has received enthusiastic reviews from reviews from Hadassah Magazine and WEVD Radio in New York. In Israel she has been heard on Radio West and Arutz Sheva.
